Planning on starting something new?

It’s the beginning of a new year and you’re super fired up about it, right? And so you should be! With January in full swing, well, life is full of new beginnings. Truth is, we as humans tend to look for opportunities to wipe the proverbial slate clean and start again.

However, most of us are so focused on dealing with work and spending time with and taking care of our families (while trying to keep ahead of household duties!) that we tend to live the same lives year after year. Sound familiar? Did you know that while most of us set New Year’s resolutions, studies reveal that fewer than 10% of us manage to stick to them for more than a few months? Why? Well, the reason is that we see these changes as enormous obstacles rather than the result of small, daily decisions.

Here’s the thing, the key to starting something new is that it should be small enough to be doable, but big enough to still give you that “hell yeah” feeling when you realise it’s November and you’re still going strong!

Although a bit scary, starting something new offers excitement and opportunity. Whether you’re embarking on a new career path, moving to a new city, or simply planning to replace an old bad habit with a new better one: remember, change is good. Fact is, to stay relevant we have to be willing to change. What got you where you are today isn’t going to get you where you want to be tomorrow and very often the start of something new begins when you shift your mind in a new direction.

So, don’t be afraid to fail, failure is simply a roadmap for what not to do next. Open yourself up to every opportunity. We’re all so worried about what other people might think of us. The truth is that no one cares because they’re worried about themselves!

Don’t try to fit in. Embrace your differences and once you’ve identified what makes you different, concentrate on that. To be successful you don’t have to change who you are, you just have to become more of who you are, own that. So, take care of your own needs this year. People who are self-focused but not self-involved are healthier, happier, have better relationships and have better leadership skills.

Don’t get hung up on perfect. Identify the things that are worth “gold plating” and then adopt a policy where good is good enough. Stop worrying too much about the big picture, focus more on celebrating every milestone. And, listen to your heart, it will provide you with wisdom and guidance that your thinking mind cannot comprehend.

Treat your body well. It’s your home on this earth, so nourish it with water, whole foods, walks and exercise. Make sure to pause throughout the day; take time to experience the beauty of everyday life. Also, surround yourself with dreamers, doers and believers who bring out your greatness.

Remember to let go of the past and understand that others are not responsible for your happiness, so start filling yourself up with whatever you need today.
