Self-care Tips to Avoid Burnout

Self-care Tips to Avoid Burnout

18 April 2019

It’s mid-April and it has come to our attention that you take an awful lot of pride in being extremely busy while flirting dangerously close to the edge of burnout.

2019 truly started with a bang and if it feels like you’re facing your own personal energy crisis, you’re not alone! Burnout is a serious problem, and the less you take care of yourself, the more likely it is to occur.

There are far too many of us suffering from depression, anxiety and overwhelm. Are you taking care of yourself? Because when you do, you are building the strongest, healthiest version of yourself. And, this version, is the one best equipped to face life’s responsibilities. Simple as that.

So, let’s keep it brief and focus on self-care tips that will have the biggest impact in the shortest amount of time:

Take a walk

No, we’re not talking about quitting your job! Studies carried out by Princeton University found that the brains of those who are sedentary aren’t able to function as well. So, take yourself off for a little trot! Use a standing desk and take regular breaks. Also, make use of a Time Out app for reminders.

Balance your Yin and your Yang

Yoga literally saves millions of panic attacks a day. Some dude quoted: “The goal of meditation isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you.”

Stay hydrated

Even mild dehydration affects your ability to think clearly. Make sure to guzzle at least two litres of H2O every day.

Stop drinking

Alcohol is a depressant. The clarity you’ll gain from cutting it out of your life – if only for a period – is ridiculous.

Sleep, sleep, sleep

Unless you’re a robot, you need sleep to function. So, drink some camomile tea, take a magnesium supplement, and finish your to-do list for the following day before you hit the sack so it’s not running around and driving you crazy as you try to nod off.

Unplug your phone

Get in the habit of turning airplane mode on sporadically throughout the day. Put your phone away when you’re in the company of others, it will make you a better human being.

Talk to someone

If you have someone in your life that’s truly awesome and supportive, great. If not, there’s no shame in paying for it. A problem shared is a problem solved.

Listen to music

If you find Eminem to be great, hey, it’s all on you. Studies confirm music will help to reduce stress levels.

Count your blessings

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” – Zig Ziglar. We’re all in agreement with Ziggy!

Here’s the thing, life is, well… life. It’s always going to be hard. So be gentle with yourself; observe your energy levels and take action before you crash and burn.

Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.
