In case you haven’t picked up on the “subtle” hints all around; here’s the message loud and clear: It’s almost Valentine’s Day. And … you’re single! And no, this is not going to be a rant against chocolates and flowers, both of which we’re quite fond of, you?
Even if you don’t take the “heart-shaped-Chocolates and Rose Day” too seriously; c’mon, be your own valentine. Are you rolling your eyes right now? We know, we know, this isn’t really an original thought, but bear with us.
There’s a presumption that if you’re single, your life is empty. So, 14 February, “Singles Awareness Day” or “National lonely hearts Day” then, right? Actually, quite the opposite. According to Eric Klinenberg, author of Going Solo, The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, people are choosing to live alone, and despite the best efforts of every romantic comedy ever made to convince us otherwise, many consider their single status “a mark of distinction, not a social failure.”
In fact, there’s a rom-com still to be documented and it goes like this: There’s a single girl with many best friends – men and women, and the occasional lover, and a heap of crushes and she moves through life with no regrets and no cats. Happy mostly. Just like everyone else …
So, ok, what about the happy singletons among us, you know, those who don’t actually MIND being single on V-Day? Shouldn’t the celebration have something for us as well? In short, definitely YES!
Thing is, whether you’re flying solo or just not with your boo for Valentine’s Day, go ahead, revel in love. Having a day to reconnect with yourself and your friends can make you feel good beyond belief!
True, Valentine’s Day gets a lot of media attention, and when you don’t have a special someone to share it with; it can be brutal. BUT it doesn’t have to be!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! #AllAboutYou.
