It’s that time of the year again, when just having enough oomph to get through the day is a challenge! Feeling exhausted has its own acronym, TATT - “Tired all the time”.
If you are suffering from constant fatigue, it’s a sign that your body’s normal systems are being disrupted. There’s no reason to push through or ignore it. Fatigue tends to snowball. Gradually worsening, until you feel like a hamster on an exercise wheel – exhausted and losing steam, but not getting anywhere. Fatigue is a sign of our overbooked times!
The top three reasons for feeling tired are obviously not sticking to a healthy diet, not exercising enough and not getting enough sleep - you saw this coming, right? What if you have tried these lifestyle changes and found them unsustainable? There has to be another way…
At any given time, one in five people feel unusually tired and one in ten has prolonged fatigue. It is unusual to find anything physically wrong. Most of the time, fatigue is linked with mood and the accumulation of lots of little stresses in life. So, whether you are training for a marathon or your day simply feels like one, these few lifestyle tweaks may do more for you than what you could ever imagine:
- If sluggishness, like yawning, is contagious, then might energy be too? In which case, would spending time with energetic people pep you up? Make a list of people whose energy you might be able to tap. Energy by “osmosis”! Make every social interaction an exchange of energy with people whose “oomph” is enthusiastic and passionate.
- Have a “can do” attitude. A positive outlook will energise you. A “can do” spirit can supply you with the momentum you need to get through the difficult parts of the day.
- Quit freaking out. One of the biggest energy consumers of our day has nothing to do with packed schedules or sweaty workouts. Little everyday stressors, like sitting in traffic can cause a total energy meltdown. Your heart rate rises, your muscles tense, and your mind go on high alert. Your energy starts to crash, leaving you tired and unfocused.
- Turn off the TV. If your typical fix for the end of the day is to plop down in front of the TV…don’t. Scientists have found that instead of numbing your mind in front of the TV, a scenic walk in the outdoors will energise and refresh you. This will stimulate neurotransmitters, such as dopamine witch will create feelings of greater energy.
- Listen to music. Engage in music therapy any time of the day to reduce stress and stimulate your mind.
- Dress up. Putting some extra effort into your look will pep up your step!
- Avoid the quick fix. Cut back on the sweets. Sugar gives us a jolt of energy but inevitably leaves us feeling tired. Try healthy snacks in between meals such as fruits or nuts.
- Make a conscious effort to be happy every day, be mindful and appreciate the moment.
