Built Different: A breath of fresh air in SA’s medical aid industry

Built Different: A breath of fresh air in SA’s medical aid industry

17 October 2025

You’ve been hearing the phrase Built Different, but what do we actually mean by a medical aid scheme that’s Built Different?

With the amalgamation of Fedhealth and Medshield on the horizon, Built Different becomes the blueprint for a stronger, more sustainable scheme. And it’s no longer just a dream, but a journey that will unfold over the next few months. Let’s explore what’s on the horizon…

Fedhealth and Medshield amalgamation
The journey to merge Fedhealth and Medshield has been in motion for some time. Our objective has been clear from the start: To create a member-centric scheme, grounded in five core values, that rethinks how healthcare can solve the everyday pain points of a stagnant industry. From Day One, this amalgamation will place us in a new league as a stronger, larger, united scheme.

This type of scale gives us strength, and with strength comes better value for our members. It will mean financial stability members can trust, and the security of knowing this scheme will endure.

More choice than ever before
The choice this new scheme will unlock is unmatched – the biggest and broadest option range in South Africa. From your first job, to building a family, to planning retirement… there will be a perfect fit for every stage of life. Personalised, and rooted in the idea of giving every member greater control over affordability. Additionally, since we already share key partners like Medscheme, this transition will be seamless. The systems, the service, the support – all ready to go from day one.

Partnership with Sanlam
One of the biggest differentiators for our combined scheme is
undoubtedly our partnership with Sanlam. As their preferred medical aid partner, new doors will open – access to corporate clients, union groups, and untapped markets. That means younger members, a stronger risk pool, and
sustainability for decades to come. And for your individual clients, access to a whole new world of holistically integrated health, wealth and rewards.
This is healthcare reimagined, making medical aid part of something bigger. No longer just a standalone purchase, but an integrated part of any financial plan. Where health and wealth grow side by side, and smart choices are rewarded with real benefits. And as this new era of shared partnership between Fedhealth, Medshield and Sanlam takes us from three entities to one, the long-term goals are clear: to become South Africa’s most trusted medical aid scheme by 2030.

In the home straight
While we’ve finalised the details of this complex undertaking some time ago, we’re still awaiting approval from the Council for Medical Schemes on the exposition document, and we remain confident in a positive outcome. We’re ready to reveal it all – from our exciting new name and branding to the most extensive option range South Africa has ever seen – but the approval process means that part of the journey will have to wait a little longer. But it makes no difference, because the true power of our rejuvenated scheme is not in a logo or colour palette. Instead, it’s in the new possibilities that beckon and what we’ve showed at the launch that lays the foundation of what’s to come. It’s the core of what makes us “Built Different”.
