For most people the “naughty drawer” next to your bed, or in a secret box nearby is ideal. However, you know how it goes … sex might just be on the table when you go out.
Sure, you are fully aware of the importance of safe sex and reach for a condom from your wallet. But hang on a minute! Although it’s handy, it might not be the best place for condoms to be stored.
Adverse heat, moisture, friction and light conditions can negatively affect the quality of a condom and make it less affective. Think about it, wallets are stored right next to your body and that means it could absorb the body heat you produce. When condoms are subjected to heat for prolonged periods the latex becomes weaker, increasing the risk of breakage. Also, throw in a bit of friction as you walk, sit, get up, and take coins and notes in and out. Not looking good, is it?
Condoms are best kept in cool, dry spaces away from direct sunlight and objects. Your best bet is to store them at or below room temperature. Avoid storing them in your wallet, car glovebox, or bathroom where you take hot showers.
We have a few creative, discreet, and practical ideas on where to stash your condoms:
- A spectacle case. You probably have a spare one lying around, if not, buy one, they are dirt cheap. You can easily pop in quite a few. Just don’t keep glasses in there too.
- A breath mint tin or a business card holder. Private and unassuming, right?!
- An extra makeup purse. Around 40% of condoms are bought by women. Good job ladies!
- A keyring with storage. This can be helpful when you’re on-the-go – all you need to do is attach it to your keys and ensure it’s always close at hand.
- Inside your laptop case. Yeah, we’re all geeks today. Most laptop bags are packed with pockets and zippers. Just don’t add the laptop while the battery is still hot.
It is important to take care of your condoms so they can take care of your sexual health.
And yes, they do have an expiry date. “Emma is a product of a bottle of Merlot and a five-year old condom” said Monica to Chandler on Friends, in reference to Ross and Rachel’s daughter who was conceived after a one-night stand they had after a breakup.
Safe condoms and safe sex go hand in hand. When used correctly, condoms are 98% foolproof, protecting you from STDs and unplanned or unwanted pregnancies.
