Joining the conversation about medical aid problems and how Fedhealth has fixed them

13 August 2024

When DJ Warras of The Shady Podcast fame aired his frustrations a while ago about the limitations of the day-to-day savings on his medical aid plan, it set in motion a lively conversation that was soon picked up by radio stations like 947 and KFM, financial journalists like Maya Fisher-French and social media influencers alike. A website www.fixmedicalaid.co.za posted and shared video clips, interviews and more, as they appeared across different media channels.

Needless to say, since this is exactly the type of conversation that would pique our interest as a Scheme, we reached out to DJ Warras and offered to weigh in on the topic. Especially, since we’ve made it our business to offer our members unrivalled levels of customisation so that ultimately, their medical aid can be tailor-made to suit their needs and budget.

Mohamed Moolla, Fedhealth’s Technical Marketing Actuary, provided insights into how Fedhealth addresses four medical ‘issues’ that came up. We’ve included links to the interviews below so you can have a listen, as well as emailers that unpacks each of our solutions:

  1. Why you can’t choose how much day-to-day savings you need, and have to pay for it regardless of whether you’ve used it.

    2. Why healthy members who claim less pay the same as older members who claim more.

    3. Why medical aid network options may cut members’ benefits on top of restricting providers.

    4. Why you can only upgrade your medical aid option once a year, regardless of whether your health needs change.

South Africa’s medical aid industry has been long overdue for change in terms of the flexibility it offers. While some areas of medical aid can’t be changed due to regulations, there are others that can.

By thinking out of the box, Fedhealth is turning these problems into opportunities and adding more value than ever to the average South African medical aid consumer!
