Just like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day has a real tendency to sneak up on us, don’t you think (despite the “subtle” hints in all shop windows)? In fact, it is this coming Sunday the 18th, to be more specific.
The idea of a special day to celebrate and honour fatherhood was first introduced in the United States in 1910, when a 27-year-old woman from Washington proposed it to honour the man who raised her when her mom died during childbirth. So, on the third Sunday of June every year, we get to celebrate our “go-to” guys.
Dads are playing their part with gusto and should be recognised for that. They have more emotional relationships with their kids, from day one, than ever before. Did you know that fathers who take a week or more off to spend time with their newborn are closer to their child during every stage of their life, right up into young adulthood? Pretty impressive, not so?
So, how could you thank your pops this Father’s Day without breaking the bank? C’mon let’s think outside the box though… no more socks, ties, belts and soap-on-a-rope (you’re welcome dads!)
Here are some great ideas (sorry, sports car not included!) to show Dad a little love:
- Make the day ALL about him. Find out what he wants to do for the day, and enjoy it together. Hang out watching sport, movies – whatever he wants to do (with a big smile!).
- If your dad enjoys a good whiskey, help him to sip in style with a great tumbler.
- Make a rugby hamper. Some biltong, a few craft beers, maybe a bag of his favourite sweets, a ribbon and voila!
- Does he play golf? A bottle of water to keep him hydrated, a chocolate bar to lift his spirits if he’s not winning and a few new balls when he whacks one into the water.
- To the Grill Master, a.k.a. Dad – grill tools. Perfect!
- A utility apron for all purposes may be just what he needs. Great for grilling, cooking, bike maintenance, etc.
- A leather wallet. Customised with a favourite quote.
- Does he love gadgets? If he’s always struggling to find the remote – get him the remote-control finder from yuppie gadgets. Or, if you have a bigger budget, 3D glasses for his smartphone.
- Does he have a beard? Help him to keep it shiny and healthy with beard oil and a beard comb.
- For DIY dads, a cordless screwdriver may be just the thing.
- For the nerdy dad, a trendy striped or a wooden bowtie could do the trick. Maybe a Batman hipflask will put a smile on his face!
- Since it’s winter, a hand-knitted scarf or a fluffy gown to spend weekends in will be much appreciated.
- If Dad is a bit of a foodie, treat him to a mouth-watering brunch – if this is your thing, book now!
- A travel gift bag with pampering goodies for his next trip?
- A dad-friendly book for snuggling under the covers on cold Sunday mornings is always a winner.
Remember, no matter what you get your dad, he will appreciate the love and the thought that went into it.
