The Wardrobe Detox

6 September 2018

Thinking of packing away the winter woollies and heavy coats? (hey, let’s be optimistic!)

With a new season comes new trends, and with new trends come new clothes. But, with buying drool-worthy new spring pieces comes the inevitable task of making room for those coveted items in your already overflowing closet, right?

For some of us this involves a harsh dose of reality – we know, we know… you’ve accumulated a mountain of stuff that you don’t currently wear, never have worn, and probably never will wear, ever. It’s estimated that in general we only wear about 20% of our clothing 80% of the time, while a whopping 80% of our clothing only gets worn 20% of the time!

Let’s face it; our body shapes change over the years. We have babies, get stressed and we don’t always (ahem!) have time to work out. However, keeping clothes that don’t fit is not helpful. Embrace where your body is now; if you lose some weight, you’ll deserve some new clothes anyways!

Truthfully, it just makes sense to have a little overhaul at the start of each season to declutter and reorganise. Did you know that getting organised is right up there next to getting fit when it comes to the most popular changes we want to make in our lives?

So yes, there’s only one thing to do folks, we’re referring to the much dreaded closet purge!

We’ve asked a few style savvy influencers to pass on their wardrobe decluttering wisdom.

Here’s what they suggest:

Get everything out. Vacuum and wipe down your entire wardrobe and take stock of what you have.

Be ruthless. Purge anything that you haven’t worn in the last 2 years. Pick out your favourite items and put them aside. Then, make 3 piles; for family and friends, for charity, and to bid adieu. Resale is of course also an option.

Store sentimental pieces in a memory box so that they don’t take up valuable space in your closet.

Create a capsule wardrobe. Choose a set number of quality pieces to mix and match. Keep it simple: a pair of jeans, a light jacket, a crisp white shirt, sneakers and a pear of leather loafers. Dress these essential staple pieces up or down by adding quality pieces.

Store out-of-season clothes away in storage bins or spare closets. Also, avoid clogging your wardrobe up with holiday stuff; store kaftans and sunhats in a holiday box.

Try the “one-in-one-out” policy, or simply prune your wardrobe regularly to ensure that everything you own truly deserves it’s space in your clutter-free wardrobe.

Group, group, group together by category – dresses, skirts, blouses, etc. That way you’ll know exactly where to look for an item you have in mind.

Phew… that’s it! You will save yourself time and money if you have a seasonal closet sweep; this way you’ll know what you already have and what you need to buy to freshen up your wardrobe for the upcoming season.

Have fun!
