Yup, there are some dates you do not want to forget, and Sunday 13 May is one of them!

So yeah, Mother’s Day is a day you get to show your mum how grateful you are that she is in your life.

Thing is, the relationship between a mother and daughter is often complex and unlike any other. Some of us are dependent on that maternal figure and rely on our mums constantly for guidance and support, while others may spend years battling not to turn into their mother’s mirror image. Oh, just a quick fact in defence of the latter – a study by the University of Essex in England claims that “nagging mums” result in more successful daughters!

Whatever your relationship with your mum, truth is, this 24/7 career is a tough one and worth celebrating. So yes, while your kids may get their looks from their dad, a world first study concludes that a child’s cognitive and social skills (such as communicating, problem solving, listening and reasoning) come from spending time with mum. Impressive, right? But maybe, it’s even more important to remember that most mums are doing the very best they can.

So, whether your own babies are small or whether they are off on their own adventures, across the continent, living, working and adventuring… this is good mum, this is as it should be! Let’s spend this coming “Mothering Sunday” celebrating the amazing women in our lives by reflecting on all the wonderful lessons our mothers taught us.

Here are a few sound pieces of advice from a dear Mother:

You are enough, never try to be someone you’re not. Hold your head high and be proud of who you are.

Bite your tongue. Being strong and gentle spirited is an art. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.”

Be grateful for what you have.

Joy doesn’t come to you, it comes from you.

Speak out when it’s important to.

Elves don’t do the dishes overnight!

Be kind whenever possible, it’s always possible. “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”

Write as many thank you notes as you can.

Try not to be scared or resentful about things that are out of your control. Most things are out of your control.

Hope for everything but expect nothing.

Be respectful. Treat everyone equally, whether they’re the housekeeper or the CEO.

Always put a little money away that no one knows about. You never know when you might need it.

Take care of your skin.

You don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to.

Love your spouse. “If it’s important to one of you, it’s important.” Also, marriage is not about give and take, it’s about give and give some more.

Listen to your kids, be involved in their lives.

Don’t stress about every little thing. Minor setbacks in life are just that.

So, this Mother’s Day, let’s remember and focus on all the smart things our mums taught us, and then forgive and let go of the rest.
