Burn off those Christmas Calories

Burn off those Christmas Calories

2 January 2016

Worried about those Christmas kilos finding their way to your hips? Unfortunately we’ve just been through the season of the expanding waistline. Did fitness fall to the bottom of your to-do list over the festive season? We don’t blame you! It’s difficult to stay active during a time of relaxation when you’re tempted by sugar-laden, calorie-rich holiday foods. But there’s no better time than the beginning of the year to get healthy again.

Here are some other tips to get you looking your best after the holiday feasting:

Move past perfect

Let go of perfect. You don’t have to look like a supermodel, you just want to be the healthiest, strongest version of yourself.

Plan short workouts

Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual and start the day with calisthenics. Jumping jacks, push-ups and other high energy moves will spark your heart rate as well as your metabolism, helping you to burn 20% more calories during the day.

Completely change your fitness routine

If you’re a runner, start lifting. If you’re a lifter, start running. This change in routine will force your body to adapt to the new stimulus, promoting higher calorie burn.

Turn errands into exercise

Choose the furthest parking bay during your trips to the mall. Run up the stairs at work. Use your working day to get exercise in innovative ways.

Recruit a fitness buddy

It’s harder to slack down when someone else is also working out. You will feel more accountable if you choose a friend who also wants to get fit this year and stick to a routine together.

Make it official

Sign up for races throughout the coming year so you have plenty of motivation to stay in shape.

Treat yourself

No, not to that extra slice of cake! If it is in your budget, indulge in new workout clothing or fitness equipment to boost motivation throughout the year.

Watch TV

Know that less can be more. Pop in your favourite exercise DVD and get sweaty. If you’re extra busy dealing with the stress of the new year and only able to complete half of your exercise DVD, that’s ok – do as much as you can.

Have a wonderful year with filled with healthy choices and positive changes.
