Home Remedies

23 March 2016

Everyone knows an old wives tale of some or other cure for whatever’s ailing you – and most of it is hogwash! BUT, did you know that 6 cherries have the same effect as 1 aspirin? (Plus cherries are filled with antioxidants!)

Because we live in a culture that is quick to demerit anything that doesn’t have a price tag, home remedies are often prematurely discredited and brushed aside for expensive patented products. Prescription medicines often treat the symptoms, instead of the cause. Isn’t it time to get back to nature and look at natural medicines and home remedies? Our reliance on pharmaceuticals is at an all-time high, and this is coming at a cost.

Natural remedies have been used effectively for hundreds of thousands of years by many different countries and cultures alike. Natural home remedies, whether they are herbal or supplemental, have been found to be very beneficial in keeping your body healthy. Turns out your pantry is full of powerful healers!  Yes, some very common household products can be used for extraordinary medicinal uses.

When using herbal remedies consumers should be aware of the fact that herbs and home remedies can interact with each other, with prescription drugs, and with some medical conditions. In fact, quite a few herbal remedies have adverse effects when combined with certain medications.

Off course not all home remedies hold the same value; some are just craziness and should be used with caution. However, there is an abundant supply of things found in nature (or in your pantry) that, when used responsibly, and with the knowledge of your doctor, can do therapeutic works of wonder.

Here are a few interesting home remedies:

  • Cough much? Eat dark chocolate. Finally! Dark chocolate contain Theobromine, as do most over the counter cough medicines. This supresses the nerves responsible for the cough reflex.
  • Burnt yourself in the kitchen? Apply a wet cool teabag to the area for quick pain reduction.
  • A toenail fungus can be cured by applying Vicks vaporub to the nail and covering it with a plaster. Repeat daily until the nail clears up. Soaking your feet twice a day in Listerine mouthwash could also do the trick.
  • Urinary tract and yeast infections – A cranberry juice a day keeps the urologist away and a yogurt a day keeps the gynaecologist away.
  • Clean and heal wounds by using honey. Honey is anti-bacterial and draws water from bacterial cells, then combining it with its natural sugars to form hydrogen peroxide, both dehydrating and eradicating bacteria.
  • Foot odour? Wipe your feet with a vodka-soaked rag.
  • Garlic or onion breath? Drink a cup of green tea to eliminate the odour.
  • A headache could be relieved by cucumber compresses. This will tighten the blood vessels, lessen the blood flow to the area, and relieve the pressure.
  • Cold and flu symptoms can be reduced by chicken soup. This one is a favourite and scientifically proven as an anti-inflammatory to soothe sore throats and clear stuffy noses.
  • Do you have the hiccups? Stop them within one minute by swallowing a teaspoon full of dry sugar.
  • Do you want to reduce fatigue and increase awareness by as much as 20%? Chew peppermint or cinnamon gum.
  • Duct tape for warts. The thought of something burnt off with liquid nitrogen is just unpleasant. Cover a wart with a small piece of duct tape for a week. This will block oxygen and stunt the growth. After a week, remove the tape; clean the area by scrubbing it with a pumice stone. Recover the wart and repeat once a week until the wart falls off.
  • Curb morning sickness with fresh lemons. The fresh, citrus scent of lemons can almost immediately relieve nausea. Keep a few slices in a zip-lock bag for instant relief.
  • Toothpaste will ease bug bites. It’s most likely the peppermint that brings about the cooling effect.
