Make 2017 Your Happiest Yet

19 January 2017

Each year we say we’ll start doing this, or stop doing that. As another year comes to a close, thoughts of new beginnings and fresh starts are on our minds. But more often than not our big plans get dashed sometime in January. Make bite-size goals within your grasp to put you on track for a healthier, happier 2017.

Here’s how:

  • One thing at a time. You might have the best of intentions to conquer the New Year, but it takes only one chaotic morning of prepping the kids for school while doing a million other things to feel overwhelmed. Take a deep breath, and do one task at a time.
  • Stop being so critical of yourself. Stand in front of the mirror and say: “I’m beautiful”. Love yourself, your body… Do this often and you’ll start to believe it.
  • Try a fashion trend you never thought you could pull off. Floppy hats, harem pants – you can do it!
  • When you’re happy and when you’re sad; embrace your emotions.
  • Enjoy life more. Take up a new hobby, go to the theatre or head to the local spa.
  • Cross something off your bucket list. Stop making excuses as to why you can’t accomplish something.
  • Keep a journal. Document your experiences. You’ll appreciate it later.
  • Dedicate a ‘me’ day every week. Take a few hours a week to read or take a class in something that interests you. If you don’t make sure that you are happy and healthy, what good are you going to be to those around you?
  • Get out of debt. Getting a handle on your finances will repay itself.
  • Take a daily walk. Commit to a 30 minute walk every day. Create an awesome playlist that pumps you up, get outside and be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Print inspirational quotes. Place them in a visible spot to boost your motivation.
  • Make a list of people you care about – let them know! Show appreciation and strengthen bonds with your loved ones.
  • Spend more time with family and friends.
  • Listen to your favourite music more. Music is a great way to put you in a better mood. There are going to be challenging moments, so reach for your favourite tunes more often and go to your happy place instantly.
  • Stop beating yourself up for skipping the gym on days you truly didn’t have time. But also, stop skipping the gym on days you had plenty of time to go.
  • Stop caring about how many people ‘like’ your Instagram photos. Social media anxiety is a waste of time.
  • Turn off your smartphone at dinner; don’t check your twitter feed when you’re with friends.
  • Help a stranger. Do good things and don’t post a Facebook status about it!
  • Conquer a fear.
  • Get a health check-up. Start the year off without having to worry about a serious condition looming in the back ground.
  • Keep fast food to a minimum. No need to go cold turkey but be aware of what it can

do to your body in the long run. Make healthier choices.

Make small changes and reap big rewards. Remember what Oscar Wilde once said, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” Happy New Year!
