With 2016 well on its way, this week means back to the grind for most of us! You feel refreshed and relaxed and … not at all ready to go back to work. Admit it; you don’t want to go back to work after this holiday! If you’re finding it hard to get back into the swing of things, you’re not the only one.
While many of us expect to sit down at our desks after time away filled with boundless energy and restored creativity; what usually ends up happening is that we spend several scattered hours sifting through piles work, unanswered emails, and phone calls you know you need to make… leaving us overwhelmed and demotivated. There’s nothing like the post-holiday blues to make you wish you’d chucked it all in and opened a yoga school on a Greek island!
For most of us getting back into the “work-groove” is never really easy. So, don’t just walk back into the lion’s den without a plan of attack.
Check out these 14 tips to help get you motivated!
Plan your return
Consider an earlier-than-last-minute return. This will give you time to unpack, pick up some groceries and get a quiet jump on emails to lessen the impact on your first day. Plan your arrival at work mid-week to give you a short first week. Try not to schedule meetings for the first day of work so you have a little space and time to readjust.
Create a list of goals
Make a list of goals for 2016.Goals inspire us to do more and to reach higher.
Dress for the occasion
Wear an outfit that makes you feel confident on your first day of work. This may seem silly, but going back to work looking great could push your productivity through the roof.
Tidy up your work-space
Chances are you‘ll be greeted by piles of files and junk-mail; take a few minutes to organize your desk. Start fresh.
Briefly review your calendar
Scan your calendar for the next couple of days to get an idea of meetings, due dates, projects and other concerns.
Make a list
Start with things you need to do on the first day, then list larger tasks for the week, the month, and so forth. Having short-term to-do lists are a great way to organize yourself and work out you’re schedule.
Get the ball rolling
Do one thing at a time. You may feel the urge to work on three different things at the same time in order to catch up, don’t. Once you’ve accomplished a small task you’ll feel more motivated to power through the rest.
Remove unnecessary distractions
Step away from the smartphone; catch up on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram at home.
Get enough rest
You may have been staying up late and sleeping in during the holidays, so make sure that you get back on track. Go to bed earlier and feel refreshed in the morning.
Think positive
Remember that work is your source of income and it needs to be taken seriously, this will keep you from procrastinating.
Take care of yourself
Get back on track with regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Take regular breaks
This will improve concentration levels.
Have some fun
Meeting a friend or colleague for lunch can make the week back seem a little less brutal!
Get some fresh air
Go for a walk during your lunch break.
Leave the office on time
Don’t be a hero. Just because you were on holiday doesn’t mean you have to put in more hours at work.
It may take a few days for you to finally get readjusted. Stay calm, focused and relaxed. You’ll be back to your old routine at work before you know it. Best of luck!
